ITIs join relief work to restore power and water in Ganjam

Around 40 students from five government ITIs and a state-run engineering school are providing free repair services in cyclone Arnab-ravaged Ganjam district.
The student teams are focusing their primary restoration efforts on Aska, the worst-affected town in the district.
Deployments include trainees from electrical, electronics, and plumbing trades across Berhampur, Sheragada, Purushottampur, Hinjilicut, Chhatrapur, and the UCP Engineering School.
The volunteers started their relief work on Monday to restore essential services across damaged communities.
They have already successfully repaired flooded electrical equipment at the Aska Sub-Divisional Hospital.
Officials divided the students into six specialized teams to handle different tasks efficiently.
On Tuesday, the teams fixed air conditioners, motor pumps, household appliances, and damaged plumbing lines.
District Skill Development Officer Arpita Priyadarshibi noted that the trainees are striving to bring back normal daily routines.
The local district administration directly supervises all restoration operations through designated team leaders.
Berhampur ITI principal Ranjan Kumar Parida praised the students for connecting technical education with real-world social service.
Recent heavy rains and subsequent severe flooding disrupted critical water supply and power distribution across Ganjam district.
Submerged floodwaters damaged numerous water-lifting pumps and essential electrical appliances in homes and public facilities.
To address the shortage of skilled labor, authorities deployed trained students to aid affected families on a rotational schedule.
Officials confirmed that student teams will continue visiting cyclone-hit neighborhoods over the coming days to complete necessary repairs.
