West Bengal Police have set up a five-member Special Investigation Team to probe the encounter killing of Samiul Sheikh in Murshidabad’s Samserganj.
The state government ordered the inquiry following the October 27 incident. Deputy Inspector General Ajeet Singh Yadav confirmed the development to reporters after issuing an official notification.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deibyendu Tamang will head the team. Inspector Swarup Biswas and Sub-Inspectors Abhijit Sarkar, Nilesh Chandra Sarkar, and Mithun Halder form the rest of the unit.
Police officers previously claimed they took Sheikh to recreate the murder scene of local BJP leader Sujit Mondal. Officers stated Sheikh snatched a weapon and opened fire while escaping.
An escorting inspector returned fire and killed Sheikh on the spot. Police had arrested Sheikh alongside Tajkira Bibi and Johnny Sheikh for Mondal’s murder.
Mondal went missing from Samserganj on August 28. Authorities later recovered his dismembered body, while opposition leaders alleged attackers used a meat-cleaver in the murder.
The case previously triggered intense political controversy and public outrage. Mondal’s wife accused the local police station of ignoring her repeated pleas for help after his disappearance.
The state government later suspended and transferred several police officials over professional negligence. Officials acknowledged significant lapses in handling the initial missing person complaint.
