Cyclist dies in road accident, compensation demanded

Saraikela, Sept 18: A cyclist, 48 year old Ratan Majhi alias Kochi Majhi of Charakpathar village was killed on being hit by a truck belonging to a company on the Saraikela-Mohitpur Road In the Saraikela-Sini Block of the Saraikela district. Enraged locals blocked the road in protest that led to a traffic bottleneck. On receipt of information, the Saraikela-Sini police arrived at the scene and requested the family members to remove the body. However, the family was not prepared to remove the body without compensation. After negotiations with company officials, the family eventually agreed to have the body removed and the roadblock was cleared.

According to information, Ratan was on his way to Sini Bazaar on his bicycle on Sunday along the dilapidated Mohitpur road. While crossing a small bridge at a construction site, a company truck was passing along that caused Ratan to lose control of his cycle and fell. As he fell, his neck got stuck in the bridge’s railing that led to his death.

It may be mentioned that the dilapidated Mohitpur road sees regular movement of heavy vehicles that have worsened its condition.

In the aftermath of the incident, local residents have demanded compensation for the deceased’s family as it is economically weak. Former Panchayat Samiti member and the district head of the International Human Rights Assistance ,Suman Karua, has urged the current representatives to hold discussions with the company management to ensure fair compensation for the grieving family and seek justice in this matter.
