Jamshedpur, Oct 18:Manohar Kumar, the suspended Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Seraikela Thana, surrendered on Tuesday in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Seraikela.
Following his surrender, Kumar was promptly taken into custody and transferred to Seraikela divisional jail. However, due to a sudden illness, he was shifted to MGM Medical College Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment under judicial custody.
Kumar had been suspended by the former Seraikela SP, Anand Prakash, after a minor boy tragically committed suicide in the Thana lock-up on October 31 last year. The SP’s decision to suspend the Seraikela OC was accompanied by instructions to register a murder case against him, responding to a complaint lodged by the family members of the deceased boy.
The incident unfolded when the minor boy, identified as Mohan Murmu, allegedly abducted a minor girl from Gahira village in Seraikela. The girl’s parents filed an FIR with the Seraikela Thana against Murmu on October 26. Subsequently, the police located and took custody of the boy, keeping him in the Thana lock-up for about four days under the pretext of investigation.
The tragic turn of events occurred on October 31 when Murmu was found hanging from a rod inside the Thana lock-up. The boy, desperate after days of confinement, had allegedly taken his own life using a leather belt.
The custodial death sparked outrage and led to the suspension of OC Kumar.
