Complaint to Labour Commissioner over proposed salary deduction for Ratan Tata statue at Tata Motors Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, June 11: A dispute has emerged at the Tata Motors plant over a proposed deduction of Rs 1,101 from employees’ salaries for the installation of a statue of the late industrialist Ratan Tata.

Prakash Kumar, a dismissed employee and General Secretary of the Telco Workers Union, which is not recognized by the management, submitted a written complaint to the Labour Commissioner alleging that the deduction was being carried out in an improper manner.

According to the complaint, copies of which have also been sent to the Deputy Labour Commissioner, Raj Bhavan, the Labour Minister, and the Labour Secretary, the Tata Motors Workers Union instructed the management to deduct Rs 1,101 from employees’ June salaries as a contribution toward the statue project.

Kumar alleged that employees who did not wish to contribute were asked to submit a written refusal to their respective Division Heads, creating pressure on workers. He contended that such a process amounted to coercion and did not reflect the genuine consent of employees.

The complainant further claimed that many employees may agree to the deduction out of fear or workplace pressure rather than voluntary willingness. He has requested intervention by the labour authorities in the matter
