Jamshedpur, June 1: As the monsoon season approaches, the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and Jugsalai Municipal Council have initiated the cleaning of major drains to mitigate potential flooding and waterlogging issues. A comprehensive cleaning drive has been launched across various areas, targeting a total of 56 major drains in the Jamshedpur Akshes Area and five major drains in the Jugsalai Municipal Council area.
Supervised by Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Limited (JUSCO), the cleaning operations encompass several key neighborhoods, including Vidyapati Nagar, Baridih, Sakchi Gurudwara Basti, Sonari, Circuit House Area, Ashiana Garden, Panchvati Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Anil Sur Path, Kadma, Ramjanm Nagar, among others.
In the Mango Municipal Corporation area, cleaning efforts are scheduled to commence from June 3, targeting significant drains such as Chanakyapuri, Moon City, Laxman Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Road No. 14, Murda Maidan, and Khadiya Basti Nala.
However, several challenges have been encountered during the cleaning process. Issues such as indiscriminate garbage disposal directly into the drains, encroachments hindering access for machinery like JCBs, and the dumping of trees into the river, resulting in blockages, have been reported. This irresponsible disposal of waste not only impedes the cleaning process but also contributes to river pollution.
The civic authorities have issued a plea to the public, urging them to refrain from littering in drains or rivers and instead utilize waste collection services. They also emphasized the importance of avoiding encroachments on drains, refraining from tree-cutting activities near water bodies, and adhering to regulations regarding the use of banned single-use plastics
