Jamshedpur, Sep 15: City police here on Thursday launched a massive drive against eve teasers and anti-social elements with all police stations carrying out simultaneous checking at various public places including streets, squares, parks and marketplaces. More than 200 persons were taken into custody from different police station areas, sources said.
With a view to curb incidents of eve teasing, loot and other kinds of day to day crime, teams led by senior superintendent of police (SSP) of East Singhbhum Anup T Mathew conducted surprise checking at street corners, marketplaces and in isolated areas to put reins on hoodlums and criminals.
Asked about the campaign, the SSP said the purpose of the drive was to prevent incidence of a host of crimes like eve teasing, loot and other types of crimes as well as public nuisance. He said the drive will continue for several days.
�We are making efforts to curb crime and take stringent action against offenders of various sorts. Such campaigns are just meant to boost policing and ensure smooth law and order situation all across the city,� he said.
The SSP was also accompanied by the SP city Prashant Anand, several DSPs and senior police officials from different police station areas.
Police sources said the campaign was launched ahead of festivities in the city with the purpose to boost public confidence in policing and district administration.
Vehicles were searched and frisking of motorists was also done during the drive. Officials at different police stations have been asked to hold meetings with local peace committees ahead of Durga Puja and seek cooperation of citizens to keep peace in their respective areas.
