CII-YI to focus on eye donation

Jamshedpur, Aug. 27 : The Jamshedpur chapter of The Confederation of Indian Industry -Young Indians (Yi) has embarkedon an initiative to promote eye donation culture in the city.

As part of the National Eye Donation Fortnight being observed from August 25 to September 8, the organisation has launched a campaign which aims to create

mass public awareness about the importance of eye donation and to motivate people to pledge their eyes for donation after death CII Yi has decided to approach hospitals to counsel families whose kin breathe their last in hospitals so that they can donate their eyes.

Addressing a press meet at Jamshedpur Eye Hospital, members of CII Yi Jharkhand and Roshni, an organisation affiliated to the Eye Bank Association of India, said that the step is being taken to build a system where hospitals across the city promote the system of cornea donation whenever there is a death in the hospital.

“The eye donation scene in Jharkhand, especially Jamshedpur is very grim. Yi Jharkhand is actively involved in spreading awareness for eye donation in Jamshedpur in association with Roshni.Yi will be taking up special initiatives during the Eye Donation Fortnight to create mass public awareness. We have decided to pproach hospitals.

Suppose thenurse or the doctor who issues the death certificate can inform the family about the cause, there are possible chances that the family will agree to donate,” said Krishna Kharia, president of CII Yi,
Jharkhand.

CII Yi along with Roshni will develop a culture to let people pledge their eyes in groups or ommunities.

” We need tounderstand importance of donating eyes.We will approach Churches, Gurudwaras and temples for
collective eye donation pledging,” said ArunaTaneja, vice-president, Roshni UditAgarwal, chair of the Gift
an Organ project of CII Yi went on to inform that people need to be made aware of the importance of donation.

Itis also important to involve students in the process. Generally when there is a death in the family, people gets emotional and forgets about cornea donation. Students can play a great role here. Since they are young they can at
least make the family aware about it and inform the Roshni team.

It will help them empathise with the situation and also do the noble work,” said Agarwal. Divya Tanjea, a senior functionary of CII YI said that they are working hard to create awareness on the importance of eye donation and have been motivating people to donate eyes to spread light in the society.

As a part of the National Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight awareness campaigns will be held at schools, colleges and various hospitals too.
