CID Uncovers Alarming Cyber Fraud Network: 8000 Bank Accounts in Jharkhand Involved

Ranchi: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Jharkhand Police has made significant strides in combating cyber fraud, revealing a shocking network of approximately 8000 bank accounts involved in fraudulent transactions across the state. The CID has meticulously compiled data on these accounts, focusing on expeditiously identifying the account holders involved in cyber fraud activities.

In a meeting held on January 12 with bank officials, the CID shared the compiled data to facilitate the swift identification process. Out of the 8000 bank accounts under scrutiny, a staggering 2000 are located in Deoghar district alone, with 20 percent of these accounts traced to various branches of the State Bank of India.

The revelation of 8000 bank accounts linked to cyber fraud in Jharkhand is both startling and concerning. Surprisingly, Deoghar district has surpassed even Jamtara, notorious for cyber fraud, as it accounts for about 25 percent of the identified fraudulent accounts in the state.

This development raises questions about whether the number of cyber fraudsters in Jharkhand exceeds 8000 or if there are other factors at play. Recent disclosures from the Delhi Police about a cyber fraud gang shed light on the modus operandi, with gang members renting accounts from individuals to facilitate the transfer of fraudulently acquired funds to bank accounts. In return, account holders were rewarded with a 10 percent commission.
The CID, under the leadership of Director General Anurag Gupta, has been relentless in its pursuit of cyber criminals. Through the Prakharna portal, the police have registered 90 cases and apprehended 468 individuals involved in cyber fraud. The authorities have also seized 1635 SIM cards and 1107 mobile phones as part of their ongoing efforts to curb cybercrime in the state.
