Teachers’ Union Demands Distribution of Surplus College Funds

Jamshedpur: The Jharkhand Constituent College Intermediate Teachers’ Association issued a formal statement on Tuesday regarding the surplus funds currently sitting in Intermediate accounts across state colleges. Dr. Rakesh Kumar Pandey, State General Secretary of the association, questioned the future use of these funds now that the government has discontinued Intermediate (Class 11 and 12) enrolments in constituent colleges.

Concerns Over Financial Displacement

With the current academic session ending and new admissions halted, nearly 2,000 Intermediate teachers and non-teaching staff across Jharkhand have suddenly lost their livelihoods. Dr. Pandey highlighted that while these employees face unemployment, various college accounts hold significant amounts of money—ranging from lakhs to crores—collected through internal Intermediate sources.

Demands for Fair Compensation

Dr. Pandey expressed concern that without a clear plan, these funds might either remain frozen or be misappropriated. He proposed that college managements distribute these accumulated funds among the displaced staff. He argued that since these teachers and employees served for years on very low honorariums, this payout would provide them with the necessary capital to start small businesses or find alternative employment.

Planned Government Advocacy

The union leader announced his intention to meet with government officials to formally request a “respectable compensation amount” for all former Intermediate staff. He emphasized that this financial support is a matter of justice for those who sustained the state’s Intermediate education system for years before its sudden closure.
