Jamshedpur: At the stroke of midnight, church bells resonated through the city as Christians celebrated Christmas with devotion and joy. Midnight masses were conducted in churches large and small, drawing a significant number of devotees.

Amid the festivities, a solemn undertone prevailed as members of the Christian community expressed solidarity against recent terror attacks in Mumbai. Prayers for universal peace, love, and harmony were offered, reflecting the community’s hope for a better tomorrow.

Christmas trees and wreaths adorned homes across the city, while youngsters, dressed in new outfits, sang carols and spread cheer. The celebrations transcended religious boundaries, with people from diverse faiths joining in the festivities and exchanging warm greetings.

“The celebrations were subdued this year due to the tragic events in Mumbai and Orissa. We have prayed for peace and harmony to foster happiness in society,” said S.R. Das, president of the Christian Community Welfare Council.

Popular churches like Beldih Baptist Church, St. Joseph Cathedral, and St. Anthony’s Church were packed with worshippers in their finest attire. Special prayers were conducted, and pastors read selected passages from the Bible, emphasizing the teachings of Jesus Christ on love and brotherhood.

“Jesus Christ preached peace and called for coexistence in harmony. The Christmas festival brings joy and tranquility to people worldwide,” remarked Robert Fernandes, a resident of Northern Town.

Christian households hosted special feasts, while cultural organizations extended the celebrations to old age homes and orphanages.

Acts of kindness marked the day, with a local voluntary group distributing clothes, food, and cakes to beggars and the underprivileged, spreading the true spirit of Christmas.
