Bhopal (IANS): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday began investigating the alleged suicide and dowry harassment of former actor-model Twisha Sharma. This move comes just a day after the agency formally took over the probe from the Madhya Pradesh Police Special Investigation Team (SIT).
A CBI team visited Twisha Sharma’s matrimonial home in Bhopal on Tuesday morning, the site where investigators found her hanging on May 12.
Officials inspected the house, examined the crime scene, and began collecting evidence.
FIR filed against husband, former judge mother-in-law
Late Monday night, the central agency registered an FIR against Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, and her mother-in-law, former judge Giribala Singh.
The CBI re-registered the FIR upon taking over the case from the state police. The agency’s Special Crime Unit reached Bhopal on Monday to take charge of the investigation and seize all documents, forensic reports, and evidence that the SIT had gathered during its earlier probe.
Twisha Sharma’s death has drawn significant public attention. Her family alleges that her husband and in-laws harassed her for dowry.
While the initial post-mortem report and statements from the accused’s family point to suicide, Twisha’s family consistently claims foul play and has demanded a CBI investigation.
SIT questioned husband before transfer of probe
Before handing the case over to the CBI, the SIT questioned Samarth Singh for more than three hours on Monday. Police sources confirmed that the SIT also recreated the crime scene at the residence as part of its investigation.
During questioning, Samarth told investigators that Twisha’s behavior changed after she became pregnant and later underwent an abortion. Police sources said he repeated the same statements he had made during earlier rounds of questioning.
Court to hear applications on evidence preservation
Meanwhile, the Bhopal district court received separate applications regarding the preservation of evidence.
Advocate Ankur Pandey, appearing for Twisha’s family, requested the preservation of Call Detail Records (CDRs). Conversely, defence lawyers filed an application on behalf of Giribala Singh requesting the preservation of CCTV footage linked to the case.
The court will hear both applications later today. The CBI expects to continue questioning family members and examining digital and forensic evidence in the coming days.
