MTMH Jamshedpur performs first ‘Commando Surgery’ under Ayushman Bharat

Jamshedpur: In a major breakthrough for cancer care in Jharkhand, Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital (MTMH) has successfully carried out its first “Commando Surgery” under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, offering advanced life-saving treatment completely cashless to an economically underprivileged patient.
The highly complex surgery was performed on a patient suffering from advanced oral and head-and-neck cancer who could not have otherwise afforded the expensive treatment. The successful procedure highlighted the transformative role of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in ensuring access to quality healthcare for vulnerable sections of society.
The surgery was led by oncosurgeon Dr. Laxman Mahaseth along with Dr. Pranay Kumar Mishra, assisted by Dr. Anup Upadhyay, while anesthetic support was provided by Dr. Debashis Karmokar. The multidisciplinary effort, backed by the Oncology ICU team, ensured smooth perioperative care and successful recovery management.
Commando surgery is considered one of the most challenging oncological procedures, involving extensive tumour removal and complex reconstruction, often requiring prolonged critical care support after surgery.
Hospital officials described the achievement as a significant medical milestone for the region and a step forward in delivering equitable and affordable cancer treatment in Jharkhand and neighbouring states. Doctors, nurses, technicians and staff members at MTMH reaffirmed their commitment to providing compassionate, state-of-the-art cancer care so that financial limitations do not become a barrier to life-saving treatment.
