Ranchi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant breakthrough in the Cash for PIL case by apprehending Kolkata businessman Amit Agarwal. Following his arrest, Amit Agarwal has been taken into custody for a five-day remand. The case, initiated on January 19, 2023, saw the CBI taking action on the orders of the Jharkhand High Court, with the Delhi branch of CBI registering case number RC 2182023A0002 against the accused.
After the formal registration of the case, the CBI conducted raids at various locations linked to Amit Aggarwal in Kolkata, West Bengal, and Ranchi, Jharkhand. The investigation stemmed from allegations that Jharkhand High Court advocate Rajeev Kumar accepted a bribe of Rs 50 lakh under the pretext of managing a case. The court entrusted the inquiry to the CBI, instructing the agency to submit its report within 15 days.
In the course of the preliminary investigation, CBI officials questioned Amit Aggarwal regarding the details of how the deal to manage the PIL transpired. Interrogations delved into communication via WhatsApp and phone calls. Initial findings suggest that advocate Rajiv Kumar had initially demanded Rs 10 crore, but the final agreement settled at Rs 1 crore. The investigation is exploring the veracity of these claims and seeking evidence to substantiate them.
