Cases of eve teasing on the rise

Jamshedpur: The rising cases of eve teasing have left various girls helpless. Despite several campaigns by Jamshedpur Police, eve-teasers are roaming fearlessly all over the city with the administration doing very little to tackle the menace.

The girls of city-based colleges and hostels witness the maximum cases of eve-teasing. Girls’ hostels and colleges near areas such as Sakchi, Bistupur and Mango have become the largest preying ground for the eve-teasers.

“A number of boys loiter near our hostel area and we never find any policemen posted nearby. We just walk with our heads down and don’t look up to avoid the eve-teasers,” said a girl residing in a hostel at Sakchi.

However, police has a different version to say. “Patrolling is being done on regular basis. You can’t expect a policeman to be present every time on the scene of crime,” said Ajay Linda City Superintendent
of Police.

He added that declining moral values of the society is responsible for such increasing cases.

The Jamshedpur Police awakes every year to the condition of girls being molested everyday on streets. “We see such action by police almost every year. But again this works well for a month or two. Passing vulgar comments and touching are like everyday issue. We are now habituated to it and keep ourselves alert,” said a student of Jamshedpur Women’s College.

Cases of eve-teasing on cell phones are also on rise. Some of these callers even threaten girls of throwing acid on their faces or even killing them if their proposal is not accepted.

East Singhbhum senior superintendent of police, Anoop T Mathew has said from now onward the police would lodge a complaint themselves against the eve-teaser in the event the victim avoids to do so.

The senior SP observed that if the miscreants on roads are released after being caught and handed over to the police for the crime like eve-teasing, then their morale will be further boost up.

He stated that he would pass an instruction to this effect soon, but at the same time said the girls and young women should be more aware about these social evils and should muster courage to lodge complaint against such people whenever a situation so arises.

A 17-year-old girl was being teased by a youth near the Karimcity College.  As the girl was being teased and was in an awkward position, two men who were passing through the area, caught the youth, who was about 18.  After he was caught the girl complained that he was teasing her for the past 15 minutes, they thrashed the youth and handed him over to the Sakchi police station which was close to the scene.

The men had asked the girl too to accompany them to the police station so that the police may take necessary action.  In the meantime, the girl who is a resident of Baradwari informed her parents who turned up at the police station.

As the officer-in-charge, Gopal Prasad Singh asked the girl to lodge a formal complaint so as to take necessary action against the accused, but the girl’s parents asked her not to do so as it would otherwise implicate her in a legal implication.

Notably, on Tuesday an 18-year-old youth, Mohammed Farooque was caught by a group of people in Parsudih police station area.

The people took to the accused to the police station and pressed for his arrest, but the officer-in-charge, Parsudih police station, Kamlesh Paswan did not arrest the accused unless the victim lodged a formal written complaint.

The incidents of eve-teasing and molestation is on the rise in the city as because in most of the cases, the victims do not take courage to lodge a complaint fearing legal implications.
