Jamshedpur: The city is once again witnessing a rise in the cases of harassment, eve-teasing and molestation of women, especially girl students in the city in the past few days. In most cases, bike-borne youths are committing the crime with impunity.
Though the police here claim to have tightened the noose around the habituated eve-teasers and molesters, the culprits are easily evading arrest in want of police action.
Although the government has developed an App Shakti to counter this harassment, the molesters disappear before the victim can even press a button. Further, the App functions only in Sakchi, Bistupur, Sidhgorah and Sonari whereas the incidents mostly take place in Jugsalai, Mango and Baridih.
In one incident, a student of 11th grade residing in Girls School Road, Safina Colony, Jugsalai, was stopped on her way back from tuition and misbehaved with by a youth. On resisting, the accused assaulted her and threatened her with worse consequences. However, several neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing the girls cries at which the accused fled. Formal complaints of sexual and physical assaults have been lodged against the accused at the Jugsalai PS.
In another incident, a student was returning from her tuition when a youth from Nirmalnagar misbehaved with her. The incident occurred near Mercy Hospital. The accused, who was riding a bike, had earlier worked as an electrician in the victims house. The girl complained about the incident to her family members first and then to the police.
In a third such incident, a student of Beldih Church School, Bistupur, was molested and when she revolted against the incident, she was slapped. The incident dates back to 1st April last. The child narrated the incident to her family members who lodged a written complaint at the local police station.
