Calcutta boy Manish Rajak walks away with the Golmuri Juniors title

Jamshedpur, May 19: Overnight leader Manish Rajak from the Royal Calcutta Golf Club hardly broke a sweat in the sweltering heat at the Par – 70 Golmuri Golf Course here to walk away with the Golmuri Juniors title. He shot an eight-over 78 on the day and a gross of 12-over par 152 to beat Pratham Choudhary by a comfortable seven strokes.

Manish never looked in trouble after his overnight lead as all he needed to do was avoid making costly errors and play a steady round of golf. He would shoot seven bogeys, one double bogey on the 15th interspersed with a birdie on the par 4 6th hole.

Souvik Nayak took the second runner up place at 162 and was followed by Abhikanks Basu, who brought in the best card of the day (77), in fourth place a further stroke behind. Sreenjoy Majumdar completed the top five places with a gross of 165.

The highlight of the day was Maitreya Milan Saikia’s hole-in-one on the 14th hole. The Assam lad’s tee shot took a couple of bounces before his ball gently rolled into hole.

Joysurjo Dey and Kaushal Bagrodia, locked at the top of the category C leaderboard, went into their respective rounds and matched each other shot by shot for 21 holes on the day before Joysurjo came up trumps in an intense battle of skill and nerves between the two youngsters.

Kaushal was leading by two strokes with one hole left to play but a killer double bogey on the par 5 18th hole gave Joysurjo the look in he needed. With a par on the first playoff hole, both players walked up the 18th tee and made bogey. The action then moved to the par 5 9th hole and another pair of bogeys by them engaged them for a fourth playoff hole. Matters were settled when Kaushal left to putt for par saw Joysurjo chip in for a birdie and take home the title. Both finished with a gross of 164.

“I feel great with a win here in Golmuri and Kaushal made it really tough for me”, said the winner Joysurjo. He added, “I hope to repeat the same in Beldih from tomorrow but without the drama.”

Category D was more straight forward as overnight leader Gurmehr Bindra topped Garv Lakhmani by six strokes with a gross of 162 while Category E was won by local lad Vijay Karan Mehta of Beldih.

In the Girls’ event, Vasavi Modi was unopposed in her quest for the Category A&B title, while Fizza Ali just about edged out Vidyul Maithani in Category C. Sinjini Mukherjee won the Category D event.
