A Bihar police Assistant Sub-Inspector killed a man and injured three villagers in Madhubani district on Monday night after opening fire with his service pistol to escape an angry crowd.
The deceased, Ashok Yadav, ran a paan shop in Bengaluru and was preparing for his daughter’s wedding in December. He died from bullet wounds during treatment at the local health center.
The incident occurred at Balirajgarh village within the Babubarhi police station limits. Accused officer Chandramohan Singh had been stationed at a local police picket set up to protect archaeological artifacts.
Preliminary accounts reveal that Singh entered a local resident’s home late at night with inappropriate intentions. Two young women were sleeping inside the residence without any adult present.
A neighbor, Phulo Devi, spotted the police officer entering the house. She immediately locked the main door from the outside and alerted the neighborhood.
Dozens of villagers rushed to the scene and surrounded the building. The trapped officer pulled out his service weapon and fired four rounds into the gathering to break through the crowd.
The gunfire struck four residents instantly. Local authorities rushed the victims to the Babubarhi Community Health Centre, where doctors pronounced Ashok Yadav dead and transferred three others to advanced care.
Madhubani SSP Yogendra Kumar confirmed that Singh maintained an illicit relationship with a local woman and visited her frequently. Senior officials rushed to the crime scene following the deadly shooting.
Departmental authorities immediately suspended Singh and launched two special police teams to track him down. Investigators are currently drafting a First Information Report featuring murder charges against the fleeing officer.
Singh carries a history of lethal misconduct. Department heads previously suspended him following a fatal shooting incident in Benipatti, where a fleeing motorcyclist died during a police stop.
