BRICS Pay won’t alone ensure Global South’s Digital-Economic Sovereignty

Dev Chandrasekhar

In an ambitious pivot towards geopolitical autonomy, the BRICS-plus coalition—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has taken a monumental stride with the inauguration of BRICS Pay, underpinned by blockchain technology. BRICS Pay is not just about creating an alternative payment system or the showcasing of an embrace of emerging technology, It signifies a profound movement towards establishing digital and economic sovereignty not only for BRICS-plus but also the larger Global South.

However, as promising as BRICS Pay might be, it isn’t a panacea for the deep-rooted challenges the nations of the majority world face in their pursuit of digital-economic sovereignty. That requires a comprehensive overhaul involving infrastructure localization, data protections, and securing the information highways lying beneath our oceans and in the skies above.

Blockchain is critical, but only part of the big puzzle

BRICS Pay seeks to challenge existing global financial structures by using blockchain technology. Blockchain is known for its decentralization, security, and transparency. By adopting this technology, BRICS nations aim to reduce dependence on Western-dominated financial systems such as SWIFT. This move marks a significant step towards digital sovereignty, highlighting the importance of controlling and protecting transactional data.

However, the adoption of blockchain alone is not enough. Real digital sovereignty requires more than just technological innovation. It needs comprehensive policies, international cooperation, local infrastructure investments, and robust legal frameworks. These elements are essential for navigating a complex global financial ecosystem effectively. In short, blockchain is a critical, first step but not a complete solution.

Sovereignty need 1: Infrastructure localization and data protections

Since sovereignty is at the core of BRICS Pay, the first, necessary condition is infrastructure localization. Establishing local data centers and connectivity networks within national borders is vital. This ensures data stays within national or regional boundaries, protecting economies from disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions. However, achieving this requires coordinated investments and policy alignment.

Countries in the Global South often face economic constraints and varying political environments. These factors complicate efforts to build and maintain local digital infrastructures. Furthermore, reducing reliance on foreign technology giants presents another challenge. Data protection laws must keep pace with technological advancements to ensure privacy and security. Unfortunately, many nations lack the necessary legislative and regulatory frameworks for enforcing stringent data protection.

Sovereignty need 2: Undersea and satellite pipes to guard information flow

A critical yet often overlooked issue is global internet connectivity infrastructures. Undersea cables and satellite networks are key to global communication. These infrastructures are overwhelmingly dominated by existing global powers. BRICS Pay highlights the importance of securing these data flow conduits. However, most of the physical infrastructure still relies on international players.

Realizing digital sovereignty requires a substantial shift in these global communication arteries. This includes investing in indigenous solutions and fostering regional cooperation. The Global South faces several challenges such as technical capacity, financial resources, and geopolitical dynamics. Navigating these obstacles is essential for influencing global communication infrastructure effectively.

Geopolitico-economic lessons for the Global South

The launch of BRICS Pay offers crucial lessons for the Global South. First, it demonstrates the collective power of developing nations to challenge global financial norms. However, it is just one part of a broader puzzle. Achieving long-term digital-economic sovereignty requires unified strategies. These strategies should encompass legal reform, cross-border collaboration, and adherence to international standards while safeguarding sovereign interests.

Collaborative efforts are essential for building sustainable digital ecosystems. Regional and global partnerships can shield against external pressures and foster innovation. This implies the need to create an environment that supports both local needs and global developments.

Tech innovation must pair sovereign strategic digital-economic frameworks

While BRICS Pay is a significant step toward a fairer global financial system, it is not the sole solution. The journey to full digital-economic sovereignty requires persistent and multifaceted efforts. Technological innovation is crucial but must be paired with strategic frameworks that support infrastructure localization and data protection.

A stronger focus on policy, legislation, and international cooperation is necessary. Countries must prioritize these elements to build and maintain robust digital infrastructures. Only by addressing these broader socio-economic and geopolitical facets can the Global South navigate successfully toward digital and economic sovereignty.

As BRICS Pay continues to evolve, it serves as a beacon for the Global South. Yet, while BRICS Pay marks a pivotal moment in the quest for digital-economic sovereignty, it alone is not enough. The Global South must adopt a multifaceted approach to tackle the challenges ahead. This approach must include technological adoption, comprehensive policies, international collaboration, and the protection of digital infrastructures through robust legal frameworks.. Only then can these nations secure control over their digital and economic destinies, ensuring a more equitable future.
