Brawl over cricket betting, youth attacked at Sonari

Jamshedpur, March 13: A 26-year-old youth Rahul Kumar sustained splinter injuries as gang of four criminals entered at an apartment in Kunjnagar under Sonari police station area late on Saturday night.

The incident is said to be a fall-out of a brawl over money among operators of betting racket earned from the recently held Asia Cup Cricket Championship in Bangladesh.

Rahul is a resident of Nehru Colony in Golmuri and he escaped with minor injuries in his left hand after he was shot at.

The accused have been identified as Jamshed Ahmed alias Jammu, a resident of Sakchi, while three of his associates were identified as Mohammed Pervez, Mohammed Wasim, both residents of Sakchi, and Manish Kumar, a resident of Bagbera.

According to sources, the incident occurred when Rahul was talking with his friends on the fourth-floor of Pragati Apartment in Kunjnagar.

Someone knocked the door and Anuranjan Kumar, a resident of the flat, opened the door to find Jammu standing at the door step along with three others. Then Jammu started abusing at people inside the flat and fired a shot on the floor, the splinter from the bullet hit Rahul’s left hand. The four disappeared from the scene soon after firing the gun shot.

Sources said that on hearing the gun-shot, one of the neighbours informed the police who reached the spot and interrogated Rahul, Anuranjan and three others who were at the room during the incident. The police later sent Rahul to the MGM Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

A police officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that the firing took place following a dispute over transaction in betting on a cricket match.

DSP (headquarters-II) Amar Pandey, who also reached the spot, confirmed about the firing at Pragati Apartment. The DSP said they had raided the house of Jammu, who is the main accused in the firing incident, but he was absconding.

Officer-in-charge of the Sonari police station, Suman Anand said that they have registered a case under Arms Act against Jammu and three others on the statement of Rahul Kumar. He said the accused will be arrested soon.

Notably, Jammu is a notorious criminal and several cases are pending against him with the Sakchi and Mango police stations.
