Blast at Stone Quarry Claims Life of Shepherd in Potka

Jamshedpur: A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Kowali thana area of Potka block, near Jamshedpur, when a blast at a stone quarry turned fatal, resulting in the loss of a 55-year-old man’s life. The victim, identified as Manoj Puran, was shepherding goats near the quarry when the explosion occurred, leading to his untimely demise.

The incident unfolded in the Lakhansai panchayat along the Hata-Mosabani road, approximately 28 km away from the city. The force of the explosion caused rocks and stones to be propelled into the air, tragically leading to a stone hitting Manoj Puran in the chest. The impact of the blow left him seriously injured and caused him to collapse. Promptly, some of the workers from the mining site rushed him to Tata Main Hospital. However, upon arrival, the emergency medical team pronounced him dead.

The tragedy spurred a swift response from the local community. Residents of Lakhansai, where Manoj Puran resided, gathered at the quarry to express their grief and anger over the incident. They took a stand against the mining activities by forcefully halting the ongoing work at the site.

Ranjit Oraon, the Officer-in-Charge of Kowali thana, shed light on the ongoing investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings indicate a potential lapse in safety measures undertaken by the quarry management before triggering the blast. He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols and stated that a thorough investigation would determine if appropriate safety measures were overlooked. Oraon also assured that appropriate action would be taken against the quarry owner upon the completion of the investigation.

The loss of Manoj Puran is not only a tragedy for his family but also for the entire community. As the sole breadwinner of his family, his passing leaves a significant void and an economic burden. The incident has underscored the need for stringent safety measures within the mining industry to prevent such unfortunate accidents in the future.
