Jamshedpur: BJP Jamshedpur Mahanagar leaders criticized the Congress and the INDIA alliance for betraying women of the nation by not supporting the Women’s Reservation Bill, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
During a press conference at Tulsi Bhawan on Monday, BJP leaders accused the opposition of “stripping the rights of half the population” after a crucial amendment related to the 33% Women’s Reservation Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha.
“Political Self-Interest Over Women’s Rights”
Hazaribagh MP Manish Jaiswal alleged that the opposition deliberately blocked the constitutional rights of women to prevent Prime Minister Narendra Modi from taking credit. “Congress stalled this bill for 30 years while in power. Now, they continue to obstruct it despite the government’s efforts to ensure implementation by the 2029 elections,” Jaiswal stated.
He clarified that the government proposed a 50% increase in seats across all states to ensure equitable justice during the delimitation process. Jaiswal criticized opposition parties for “celebrating” the bill’s failure, calling it an open insult to the women of India.
Highlighting BJP’s Commitment
BJP State Vice President and former MLA Bhanu Pratap Shahi said, “The Congress governed for 60 years but didn’t grant even 1% reservation. Now they block 33%.” Shahi argued that the 1971 freeze on delimitation by the Indira Gandhi government hindered political growth. He noted that in Jharkhand alone, a fresh delimitation could increase Assembly seats from 81 to over 120, significantly boosting representation for women, SC, and ST communities.
Call to Action and Protests
The BJP leaders questioned why Chief Minister Hemant Soren and MLA Kalpana Soren have not supported the delimitation process, accusing the JMM of deceiving Jharkhand’s women.
To take this issue to the masses, the BJP announced a series of protests:
- April 25: A state-level foot march (Padyatra).
- April 30: Mandal-level awareness programs to inform households about the opposition’s “anti-women” stance.
