Jamshedpur, July 25: Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy met senior Supreme Court lawyer Sanjay Upadhyay in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the issue of house demolitions in the Kalyan Nagar and Indira Nagar slums of Jamshedpur. Upadhyay assured Roy that he would represent the slum dwellers’ case in the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

During their meeting, Sanjay Upadhyay explained that the slum dwellers would need to provide a Vakalatnama ( legal document authorizing an advocate to represent them) for him to proceed. Saryu Roy took the responsibility of collecting the necessary Vakalatnama documents and delivering them during his next visit to Delhi.

The NGT is scheduled to hear the case on August 23, 2024. Saryu Roy mentioned that a dozen selected slum dwellers would present their case through the Vakalatnama, demanding that the administration conduct a proper survey. He criticized the current survey, stating it was flawed and did not comply with NGT guidelines, overlooking certain critical facts.

The colony residents also planned to submit a memorandum to the Chief Secretary, who must file an affidavit with the NGT by August 23. They would insist that their concerns be included in the affidavit. If their concerns were not addressed, they would submit their affidavit through senior advocate Sanjay Upadhyay, requesting the NGT to consider their proposal.
