Witch hunting whiff in murder of elderly woman

Seraikela, December 16: The beheaded body of an elderly 70-year-old woman Page alias Gurbari Sardar, who went missing a week ago from Surabeda village under Kuchai police station area, was found stuffed in a sack from the pend of Chorpadiya. The woman was murdered by slitting her throat with a sharp weapon.

The murder took place on suspicion of being a witch. The deceased woman was identified as a 70-year-old man of Surabeda village in Kuchai.

On getting information about this on Thursday, Kuchai police reached the spot and recovered a tree wrapped in sacks and trunk and sent it for post-mortem.

Saree and blood stains have been found from the bushes of the incident site. The incident has created a sensation in the area. According to Soma Sardar, husband of the deceased Page she had been missing  from 4 pm on December 7 last.

She was returning after selling oranges under a tamarind tree, about 100 meters from her house when she went missing. The decapitated body of an elderly woman was found on a pedestal, about 100 meters away from Eklavya Ashram Vidyalaya in Chorpadiya, Kuchai. The woman’s body was kept on a pedestal after filling it in a sack. While the body of the woman was found lying in the bush. The woman’s sari and blood stains were found from the bushes at the spot.

Soma Sardar, the husband of the deceased Page, had given a written application to the Kuchai police station and the Superintendent of Police in this regard and requested to search for his wife. In which he told that 25-year-old Naren Samad of the village had threatened to kill her by calling her a witch, asked her to cure her sick child..

 Naren had tried to strangle Soma’s sister Chikni Sardar on the same day, calling her a witch. In a letter to the Superintendent of Police, the aged Soma has told that Naren had accused his wife and sister earlier also by calling him a witch. He had feared that Naren had killed his wife Page and disappeared somewhere. Doman Sardar, son of the deceased Page, who reached Seraikela f said that no action was taken even after the father complained. And Naren is still roaming in the village.
