Jamshedpur: Ipomoea cornea, commonly known as Behaya or Thethar, once abundant in Jamshedpur, has now vanished from the cityscape. These plants, which used to grow profusely across the city until about 15 years ago, are now conspicuously absent. Their disappearance marks a loss for the city’s ecological balance and remedial capabilities against industrial pollution.

Ipomoea cornea, a member of the Convolvulaceae family, earned its reputation as an invasive species due to its ability to thrive in various conditions without maintenance. Botanists have hailed its unique ability to absorb and accumulate pollutants, particularly metals from industrial waste, as a crucial ecological service. According to a research report published in the UGC-certified Journal of Emerging Technology and Innovative Research, the roots, leaves, and stems of these plants effectively absorb residues of metals like cadmium, copper, chromium, nickel, lead, and zinc.

Dr. Nitish Priyadarshi, an expert in botany and Assistant Professor at Ranchi University’s Department of Geology, underscores the plant’s significance in ecological conservation. He notes that Ipomoea cornea is not only eco-friendly and cost-effective but also possesses medicinal properties. Locally known as Behaya or Thethar, the plant has been traditionally used for treating various ailments, including skin diseases like leucoderma.

Despite its ecological benefits, the plant faces endangerment, not only in Jamshedpur but also in the state capital, Ranchi. Dr. Nitish Priyadarshi expresses concern over its dwindling population, attributing its decline to factors such as smoke exposure when used as fuel. He highlights that while the plant absorbs toxic residues, it can become toxic itself, posing risks if ingested by animals or if its smoke is inhaled.

As efforts to conserve and protect indigenous flora continue, the disappearance of Behaya and Thethar from Jamshedpur’s landscape serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between industrial progress and environmental stewardship.
