Doctor unhurt in shootout, cops investigate extortion angle

Jamshedpur, July 10: Unidentified assailants opened fire on Dr SK Kundu of MGM Medical College Hospital (MGMCH) near Apex Hospital in Sakchi police station area on Wednesday evening.

Dr Kundu escaped unhurt in the incident, police said. It was only two days ago when Dr Kundu registered a police complaint for having received an extortion call from unidentified persons demanding Rs 5 lakh as rangdari from him. Sources said the incident took place around 4 pm when Dr Kundu just came out of his car to enter Apex Hospital premises. Just then, assailants came close to him and opened fire while targeting him. The bullets missed their target. Before long, the assailants decamped.
Cops said an investigation was on to identify the culprits. Security personnel were provided to Dr Kundu after the incident, sources said.

Eyewitnesses told police two motorcycle-borne youths were waiting outside the hospital. No sooner did Dr Kundi arrive, they fired on him.
Earlier, Dr Kundu had received a threatening call during an event of Indian Medical Association. Coincidentally, SSP Anoop Birtharay was also present during the event held at Hotel Alcor. He told cops the extortion was sought in the name of Akhilesh Singh, accused in various cases lodged by city police.
