New Asansol-Bokaro MEMU: Boosting Industrial Connectivity Between Bengal and Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw bridged the gap between two of Eastern India’s biggest industrial powerhouses by flagging off the Asansol–Bokaro Steel City MEMU service. Launched via video conferencing alongside LoP Suvendu Adhikari, the new all-electric service provides a dedicated lifeline for thousands of SAIL employees, students, and small traders who previously struggled with costly bus fares and irregular long-distance train schedules.

The new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train is expected to ease long-standing commuting difficulties for workers, students, and small traders who travel daily between Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, and Bokaro. Until now, commuters largely depended on buses or irregular long-distance trains, often facing high travel costs and delays.

Railway officials said the service will particularly benefit employees of steel and allied industries, including SAIL units in Asansol and Bokaro, by providing a reliable and time-efficient daily travel option. The MEMU will also halt at smaller stations, improving access for rural areas in Purulia and nearby regions to larger industrial and commercial centres.

Students travelling across the state border for education and coaching facilities are also expected to benefit, as the service reduces the need for costly accommodation in cities. With affordable fares and the option of monthly season tickets, the train makes long-distance daily commuting financially viable for a wider section of passengers.

The MEMU service, powered by an all-electric system, offers year-round reliability and is expected to stimulate economic activity around intermediate stations by increasing passenger movement and local trade. Railway authorities described the launch as a step towards strengthening regional integration and supporting the industrial growth of eastern India.
