Jamshedpur : The East Singhbhum district administration has taken proactive measures to meet the challenges related to the drinking water shortage in city. The administration has decided that in the first phase, water will be distributed using tankers in different localities. Officials said that operation of tankers would continue till during the summer season.
The district administration expects that due to the scanty rainfall last year, more tube wells could dry up as the groundwater recedes further. To ensure water supply in the affected area, the public health and engineering department will increase the water tanker trips.
The drinking water and sanitation department (DW&SD) executive engineers and JNAC officials were asked to repair defunct tube-wells in their respective command areas within a deadline of ten days.
The drinking water crisis in areas like Birsanagar, Barinagar, Bagunhatu, Baridih Basti, Moharda, Govindpur, Rahargora, Jojobera, Namda Basti, Manifit, Jemco, Ghorabandha , Parsudih, Sundernagar, Jugsalai, Mango and several other areas located in the periphery of the steel city was discussed during the meeting. �The scarcity of water was there even in the last year but this year the situation may go further grim and we were left with no option but to ferry the water from nearest possible source we could,� said the official.
Executive engineer of drinking water and sanitation department, Jamshedpur division, Suresh Prasad said that large number of tubewells have become dysfunctional in city outskirts due to depletion of ground water table.
The East Singhbhum district administration has deputed senior administrative officials in each of the 11 blocks of the district for constant monitoring of the water scenario from Tuesday.
Tata Steel wholly owned subsidiary Jusco which looks after water supplies in Tata Steel areas from today has given four tankers in two distribution vans to the district administration for water distribution in parched areas.
According to the information, the water problem is more severe in the areas located at the tail-end of water supply system and on the city outskirts. In order to end the water woes of the resident the district administration has decided to distribute water through tankers in the areas of Baghbera, Jugsalai, Pursudih and Karandih, which are the worst affected areas.
�It is really an agonising wait for the women for the arrival of water tankers in areas deprived of water supplies through the pipelines. Long queues of women standing fro waters at hand pumps are regular feature,� said Abhay Kant, a resident of Baghbera.
