A riot of colours marks Navratri Celebrations at Gujarati Sanatan Samaj Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: The festive spirit of Navratri has transformed the premises of the Gujarati Sanatan Samaj, the oldest and most prominent Gujarati community organization in the city, into a vibrant and colorful spectacle.

With the commencement of the nine-day festival, the Samaj has come alive with the rhythmic sounds of raas, garba, and dandiya as 16 teams and over 700 participants take part in this much-awaited annual celebration.

Dressed in traditional Gujarati sarees and chaniya cholis, community members, young and old, are showcasing their skills in dance, keeping the rich heritage of their homeland alive.

The Gujarati Sanatan Samaj, which has been celebrating Navratri for more than eight decades, continues its tradition with the same zeal and enthusiasm as in previous years. However, this year’s celebration comes with a special focus on showcasing Hindu culture and values.

In a new addition to this year’s celebration, the Gujarati Sanatan Samaj has included performances that highlight the richness of Hindu culture. Groups of participants are enacting dramas that bring to life the stories from Hindu mythology and showcase the cultural heritage of India.

These performances have added a new dimension to the traditional Navratri celebrations, making them not only an occasion of joy and festivity but also one of learning and reflection on the roots of Hindu culture.

A senior functionary of the Gujarati Sanatan Samaj emphasized the importance of maintaining tradition through such celebrations. “We have been organizing the traditional dandiya and garba dances for the Gujarati community in the city for more than eight decades. What makes this celebration unique is the participation of people from all communities. Navratri is not just for Gujaratis; it’s a time when we come together, irrespective of our backgrounds, to celebrate unity, dance, and devotion,” he said.

Navratri celebrations are not limited to the premises of the Gujarati Sanatan Samaj. The Sri Surat Gujarati Samaj, another prominent community organization, is also organizing Ras Garba and Dandiya performances at the Jalaram Temple in Bistupur every night during the nine-day festival.

Men and women, dressed in their festive best, gather at 9 p.m. each night to perform garba and dandiya to the beats of traditional music. The festivities here will continue until Navami, the ninth day of Navratri, with enthusiastic participation from all sections of the community.

The traditional rituals of worship and homage to Goddess Durga are an essential part of the celebrations. Every evening, the crowds come together to perform aarti and offer prayers, seeking blessings for health, prosperity, and happiness.

Following the rituals, the premises transform into a grand dance floor as the rhythmic clapping of garba and the swirling sticks of dandiya bring the atmosphere to life. The celebratory atmosphere is further enhanced by the delectable Gujarati delicacies that are a staple during this time.

Navratri celebrations at the Gujarati Sanatan Samaj wouldn’t be complete without the traditional Gujarati delicacies that add a unique flavor to the festival.

Popular items like ‘gathiya’, ‘undhiyu’, ‘phaphra’, and ‘dhokla’ are served to participants and guests, offering a delicious taste of Gujarat’s rich culinary tradition. These dishes are an integral part of the celebrations and are relished by all who attend.
