Latehar: Just two days after a national declaration of a Maoist-free India, security forces in Jharkhand achieved a major breakthrough. Surendra Lohra (alias ‘Tiger’), a high-ranking sub-zonal commander of the banned Jharkhand Janmukti Parishad (JJP), surrendered before top police officials on Thursday.
A Decisive Blow to Extremism
Lohra, who carried a Rs 5 lakh bounty on his head, officially laid down his arms in the presence of Palamu Range IG Shailendra Kumar Sinha and Latehar Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav.
A resident of Manjar village, Lohra’s criminal record spans nearly two decades. Police records identify him as a key figure wanted in multiple serious cases across various police stations in the district.
The Power of ‘Nayi Disha’
IG Shailendra Kumar Sinha credited the surrender to the Jharkhand government’s rehabilitation policy, ‘Nayi Disha’. The initiative aims to provide a dignified exit for insurgents by offering financial support and social reintegration.
“Lohra chose to abandon the path of violence after being briefed on the extensive benefits and support available under the state’s surrender policy,” IG Sinha stated during the ceremony.
Latehar’s Path to Peace
SP Kumar Gaurav highlighted the district’s significant progress, noting that 28 Maoists have surrendered during his 18-month tenure. He described this latest surrender as a “major milestone” in the ongoing campaign to ensure Latehar remains entirely Maoist-free.
However, the SP also issued a final warning to any remaining insurgents:
-
Option A: Take advantage of the government’s surrender policy and return to mainstream society.
-
Option B: Face intensified and strict action by security forces.
The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officers, including DSP Vinod Ravani and SHO Krishna Pal Singh Pavaiya, marking a symbolic victory for law enforcement in the region.
