A violent mob attacked three Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Monday following a dispute over suspected smuggling activities.
The confrontation began when troops from the 49th Battalion detained a local resident named Hefzur Rahman near the Ashabari Border Outpost.
Soldiers stopped Rahman on suspicion of smuggling during routine vegetation clearance operations along the Boxanagar-Rahimpur road.
The detention triggered an angry argument between local residents and the border guards stationed at the outpost.
An agitated crowd quickly gathered and blocked the main thoroughfare to protest the soldier’s action.
Demonstrators armed with wooden sticks and bamboo poles surrounded a military vehicle carrying the personnel.
The violent crowd ambushed the vehicle and brutally assaulted the troops inside.
The assault injured Company Commander Rohit alongside two other security officers during the chaos.
Emergency responders transported all three wounded soldiers to the Boxanagar Primary Health Centre for immediate medical treatment.
A video of the brutal assault surfaced online shortly after the incident, showing the mob charging at the personnel.
Social media users widely shared the footage, which depicts miscreants striking the guards repeatedly with makeshift weapons.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha strongly condemned the mob violence in a statement released on X.
He described the assault on the brave security forces as completely unacceptable and a matter of grave concern.
The Chief Minister directed local law enforcement authorities to take swift, stringent legal action against every individual responsible.
He emphasized that the state must firmly protect its border troops and deliver justice without delay.
Senior law enforcement officials immediately deployed extra security forces throughout the sensitive border region to restore public order.
Authorities continue to monitor the area closely while investigators gather further details regarding the incident.
