2,500 kg Poppy Seeds Found Unclaimed at Tatanagar Platform; Valued at Over ₹15 Lakh

Jamshedpur: On Tuesday night, the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Tatanagar Railway Station seized a massive consignment of poppy seeds (khaskhas) arriving via the Steel Express under suspicious circumstances. During the investigation, 50 sacks containing a total of 2,500 kilograms of poppy seeds were recovered, with an estimated market value of approximately ₹15.40 lakh. The consignment was later released to businessman Shailesh Agarwal after verification.

Discovery and Seizure

According to reports, the goods were unloaded from the Steel Express, which arrived at Tatanagar from Howrah. The 50 sacks remained unclaimed for a significant time under the Foot Overbridge (FOB) on Platform No. 1. When no one stepped forward to claim the consignment, the Railway Police acted promptly, transporting the sacks to the GRP station using three trolleys.

Verification and Release

On Wednesday afternoon, Shailesh Agarwal, a businessman residing in Sonari (Panchwati Nagar), arrived at the GRP station and presented valid bills and documents related to the shipment. He explained that the consignment had been ordered from Howrah for ‘Amarnath Agro Food’ located in Dobo. After verifying the documents and confirming that the goods were legitimate, the police handed over the entire stock to the businessman.

Security Measures

The police clarified that this action was part of routine efforts to maintain station security and curb illegal smuggling. They emphasized that any large, unclaimed consignment must undergo mandatory inspection to ensure public safety and compliance with the law.
