23-year-old youth drowns into Kharkai river

Jamshedpur, Aug. 19 : Police on Sunday recovered the body of a 23-year-old youth Govinda Kumar Sahu, suspected to have been drowned while taking bath at Baroda Ghat of river Kharkai under Bagbera police staiton. The victim was a resident of Bajrang Tekri near Wireless Maidan in Bagbera.

He used to work in a local grocery store had gone to take bath in river Kharkai last evening (around 5.30 pm). According to eye-witnesses, as soon as he stepped into the river the strong water currents swept him away.

The drowning victim’s mother Usha Devi reported the matter to Bagbera police last night when he did not return home. Govinda’s father Mantu Sahu had died a couple of years back. He was the only son.

This morning at around 9 am Bagbera police called in divers to carry out a search operation into the river. But, before the divers could began the operation, someone informed them a body was spotted on the river bank at the Jugsalai end.

Soon police rushed to the spot. Later, Usha Devi identified her son who was wearing a half sleeve shirt and a trouser.

Officer-in-charge of Bagbera thana Laxman Prasad said the deceased’s mother ruled out any foul play or a suicide attempt . ” We are investigating the incident. Usha Devi and 15 ward members of Bagbera also gave us in writing not to conduct post-mortem on the body,” said Prasad.
