Jamshedpur, Feb 28: The Jugsalai police in a major crackdown on drug trafficking, have busted a brown sugar smuggling racket and arrested 13 people, including a woman. The arrested individuals were caught with 150 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 15 lakh, along with eight mobile phones, Rs 7,920 in cash and other materials.
Addressing a press conference, City SP Kumar Shivashish identified Abdul Hamid (27) as the kingpin of the operation. Hamid, a resident of Baliguma Kamalpur in Seraikela-Kharsawan, allegedly sourced the brown sugar from Odisha and Adityapur before distributing it in Jugsalai and other parts of Jamshedpur.
Other arrested members include Mohd Zakir, Sajjad Khan alias Aman, Sheikh Afridi alias Khadbad, Arif Khan alias Peelat, Mohd Javed, Mohd Altaf, Mohd Chad, Mohd Arwaz alias Rohit, Nagma Khatun, Mohd Amir Gaddi, Amrit Gudiya and Sawan Das.
They were apprehended near Kharkai River, Parvati Ghat, while preparing packets for sale. The police also revealed that three of the accused were involved in a recent firing incident in Jugsalai.
“All of them have been sent to judicial custody and further investigations are underway,” confirmed SP Kumar Shivashish.
