Jamshedpur, May 29: In a shocking incident, a 10-year-old boy was drowned while taking bath in the Kharkai river along Kadma police station area on Saturday morning. A resident of Bagey Bustee along the Kadma-Sonari marine drive, the victim identified as Suraj Pramanik was taking bath in the river along with three other boys of the similar age group as he drowned. The river was slowing because of heavy rainfall.
The river is still filled with water and there was a strong current in the water-body, the boy was swept away towards the river-meet.
Police had initially tried to locate the body by pressing local divers, but as the attempt failed to yield any result, they contacted a team of NDRF to rush the spot.
OC, Kadma police station Manoj Thakur said that three teams of NDRF had come to the Ghatsila sub-division of the district for the Yass cyclone recently.
“As the NDRF teams were still stationed at Ghatsila sub-division, we requested to the higher authorities for pressing the one of the teams for tracing the body. One of the teams consisting of 24 members has just reached the spot in late in the afternoon for carrying out the operation” said Thakur.
The OC said the incident took place at about 11 am, adding that the body might have swept away in the Subernarekha river towards Ghatsila.
A local resident who was at the spot when the boy was drowned said that the victim had while taking bath had ventured into deep water and was swept away.
The locals informed the family about the son’s drowning in the river. It is known that due to heavy rains due to Yaas cyclone, the water level of the rivers has increased significantly. There is also a strong flow in the river. The people of the river-side settlements are gathering for fishing and bathing along the river, bypassing the danger. However, after the rain stopped, the water level in the rivers has receded but the flow is very high.
