World War II-era bomb unearthed again in East Singhbhum

Jamshedpur: Panic gripped the Panipoda-Nagudisai area of Baharagora block in East Singhbhum district after a massive bomb believed to be from the World War II was discovered, marking the third such recovery in the region in recent weeks.

The ordnance was found on Wednesday night by a group of villagers who had gone fishing in the Subarnarekha River. With water levels receding sharply due to the intense summer heat, the long-buried explosive became visible on the riverbed. Alarmed by the unusual object, the villagers immediately alerted local police.

Officials said the bomb is suspected to be a relic from wartime activities in the region. Earlier, on March 17, a similar explosive device was recovered from the same stretch of the river, which was later identified by an Indian Army team as American-made. Within two days of that incident, another bomb was discovered near a nearby village, both of which were safely defused.

The repeated recovery of such heavy explosives has raised serious concerns among residents and authorities alike, with fears that more such devices may still lie buried beneath layers of silt in the river. The district administration is expected to coordinate with Army bomb disposal units to safely neutralise the latest find and conduct further inspections in the area.

Authorities have urged locals to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects, as efforts continue to secure the region from potential hazards.
