World War II Bomb Found in Subarnarekha River to Be Destroyed Today, Army Seals Area

The atmosphere of fear that has gripped villages along the Subarnarekha River at Panipada–Nagudsai in East Singhbhum for the past six days is expected to ease on Wednesday, as a specialized team of the Indian Army prepares to safely destroy a powerful bomb recovered from the river.

Bomb Discovered During Fishing

The World War II bomb was discovered by local villagers while fishing nearly a week ago, triggering panic across the region. Following the alert, the Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad reached the site and has since been conducting detailed inspections and assessments to ensure safe handling of the explosive.

Controlled Explosion Planned

According to officials, the bomb will be neutralized through a controlled explosion on Wednesday. The Army has adopted a systematic approach to minimize the impact. A deep pit has been dug using heavy machinery, and sand-filled sacks have been placed around the bomb to absorb the shock waves. The detonation will be carried out remotely using a detonator.

High Alert; Area Sealed

To ensure public safety, the district administration has sealed off a one-kilometer radius around the site. Residents from nearby areas have been shifted to secure locations, including the local Panchayat Bhawan. Ghatshila SDPO Ajit Kumar Kujur stated that such explosives are typically destroyed rather than defused due to safety concerns.

Strict Vigil and Public Advisory

Authorities have urged villagers to stay away from the riverbank until the operation is completed and the area is declared safe. After the blast, debris will be collected and sent for investigation to determine the origin and nature of the bomb.

The administration, along with the Army, is maintaining strict vigilance to ensure the operation is completed without any untoward incident, bringing relief to anxious residents of the area.
