Worker dies at Tata Steel Jamshedpur Plant, family to receive Rs 50,000 monthly

Jamshedpur, April 15: A tragic incident occurred late Monday night at Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur plant, where 50-year-old contract worker Vijay Kumar Panigrahi lost his life while on duty in the Hot Strip Mill (HSM) department. The untimely death of Panigrahi has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting swift action from local representatives and company officials to ensure support for the grieving family.

On Tuesday, following the initiative of Jamshedpur East MLA Purnima Sahu, a compensation agreement was facilitated by her representative and former BJP district president Gunjan Yadav between the contract company and the victim’s family. The agreement was finalized at the family’s residence in Birsanagar in the presence of company officials, local leaders, and well-wishers.

As immediate relief, the contract company transferred ₹5 lakh to the deceased’s account through RTGS. In addition, a written agreement was signed to ensure long-term financial support for the family. The agreement includes a monthly payment of ₹50,000, acknowledging Vijay Panigrahi’s service age up to 60 years. This move aims to provide financial stability to the bereaved family.

The family will also receive around ₹10.5 lakh from Panigrahi’s Provident Fund (PF), Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), and gratuity benefits, which are to be processed promptly.

Gunjan Yadav, while expressing condolences, stated, “We cannot bring back the lost life, but we can ensure the family doesn’t face financial hardship. MLA Purnima Sahu stands firmly with the family and will continue to extend support in every possible way.”

Present during the agreement were BJP state executive committee member Mithilesh Singh Yadav, Birsanagar Mandal BJP president Bablu Gope, former Mandal president Boltu Sarkar, Shriram Prasad, Jagdish Panigrahi, Manbodh Das, Mrinal Banerjee, Vapi Parida, Mirinda Nag, and numerous local residents.

The compensation arrangement is being seen as a rare instance of swift and empathetic action, setting an example of responsible intervention during such tragedies.
