Jamshedpur, Jan 4: A sensational snatching incident in broad daylight on Sunday in the Sakchi police station area has raised serious questions over public safety. Two bike-borne criminals snatched the purse of a woman teacher near Sheetla Mandir and fled the spot.
The victim, identified as Hemlata Thakur, lodged a written complaint against unknown offenders at Sakchi police station. She told police that she had come to Sakchi market with an acquaintance for wedding shopping. While getting down from an auto-rickshaw, two youths on a motorcycle suddenly arrived and snatched her purse before she could react.
According to Hemlata Thakur, the purse contained around Rs 20,000 in cash, a mobile phone and her Aadhaar card. Locals raised an alarm, but the miscreants escaped swiftly.
Police reached the spot soon after receiving information and registered a snatching case. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined to identify the culprits. Police officials said efforts are on to arrest the accused soon. Repeated snatching incidents in busy city areas have created fear among residents, who are demanding increased patrolling.
