MLA Saryu Roy seeks immediate relief for beneficiaries of PM Awas Yojana in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy has raised numerous concerns over delays in handing over allotted flats to beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Birsa Nagar, urging the state government to expedite the process and ensure timely possession.

Roy met Jharkhand’s Urban Development and Housing Minister Sudivya Kumar and the department’s Principal Secretary Sunil Kumar in Ranchi, highlighting that despite beneficiaries having deposited the full amount and secured electricity connections, they are yet to receive the keys to their allotted flats.

He termed the delay a result of administrative apathy, causing significant mental distress and financial strain to the allottees.

According to Roy, many beneficiaries—belonging to economically weaker sections—are burdened with dual financial obligations: repaying bank loans while simultaneously paying rent for temporary accommodation. “This is an injustice being inflicted upon them,” he asserted.

The MLA revealed that over 200 beneficiaries approached him recently, expressing frustration over the lack of clarity from officials regarding possession timelines.

With May 6 considered an auspicious date for housewarming ceremonies, many had planned to perform rituals and move into their homes.

Roy said he had intended to meet Chief Minister Hemant Soren to press for immediate intervention, but the meeting could not take place due to the Chief Minister’s sudden visit to Delhi.

However, in his discussions with the minister, he was assured that while handing over keys by May 6 may not be feasible due to time constraints, the process would be completed within May.

The minister reportedly assured that soon after May 6, beneficiaries would be handed over the keys and formally inducted into their homes.

He also indicated that the government is planning a formal event, potentially attended by the Chief Minister, local MPs, MLAs, and senior officials, to mark the occasion.

Roy stated that he would convey the government’s assurance to the beneficiaries and continue to stand by them in their decision regarding the proposed May 6 puja.
