Wild elephant leads unusual parade as villagers chase for kilometers in Lapung

Ranchi: A peculiar scene unfolded in Lapung, as a massive wild elephant became the unexpected leader of a procession, with hundreds of villagers in hot pursuit. The incident occurred in Sarsa and surrounding areas, including Navatoli village of the Lapung block, on the morning of December 25.

The episode commenced when women, who had ventured into the forest for wood collection, suddenly found themselves face to face with a colossal wild elephant. Without hesitation, the elephant made its way from the forest to the village of Navatoli in Hisri village of Karra block, meandering through Daranda Chowk and Kakaria Bedo road, eventually reaching Navatoli of Latratu Panchayat around 7:00 a.m.

Word of the wild elephant’s presence spread rapidly, prompting a swift gathering of hundreds of curious onlookers. Initially startled, the crowd quickly transformed into a determined force chasing the elephant. Over a stretch of approximately five kilometers, the elephant led the way, with an enthusiastic mob in tow, creating a spectacle that left witnesses both amazed and bewildered.

Videos capturing the unusual event circulated among the crowd, documenting the unique incident. Despite occasional attempts by the elephant to turn back, the persistent noise and the large following of villagers kept the creature moving forward. Noteworthy figures in the community, including former chief Santosh Tirkey and social worker Dashrath Tirkey, also joined the spectacle.
The pursuit concluded with the villagers successfully steering the wild elephant away from Bedo, directing it towards the Hulsi forest via the Kakaria road. The incident adds an unforgettable chapter to the local community’s experiences, showcasing the harmonious yet extraordinary coexistence of humans and wildlife.
