Widow and old age pensioners protest for hike and timely payment

Jamshedpur: Over a hundred women from different localities of the city put up a demonstration before the office of the deputy commissioner on Tuesday to demand hike in pension amount given to widows and senior citizens.

Holding placards and banners and raising slogans in favour of their various demands, the protesting women demanded that the pension given to widows and aged people should be increased from the current Rs 600 to Rs 1500.

The women also demanded timely payment of their pensions under the various social security schemes by the department concerned.

The protestors handed over a memorandum to DC Amit Kumar and informed him that a total of 111 applications had been submitted between 16th August to 16th September 2016.

In December 2016, a total of 11 applications were submitted. Out of these applicants, 52 widows and 10 senior citizens were included in the list of pensioners by the government. The protestors said that majority of the pensioners were not getting their pension in time. Moreover, out of the 122 applicants, only 62 are getting pension.

Among those present during the protest included Mira Singh, Monika Karmakar, renu Devi, Savitri Mahato, Sumitra Dheewar, Rekha Swarnakar, Archana Maity, Sunaram Purty and Saraswati Kalundia.
