Islamabad (IANS): US Vice President J.D. Vance touched down in Islamabad at approximately 11:15 A.M. (IST) Saturday. He heads the American delegation for high-stakes negotiations with Iran that could reshape Middle Eastern stability and the global economy.
Before departing Joint Base Andrews aboard Air Force Two, Vance expressed optimism regarding the weekend’s agenda. “We’re looking forward to the negotiation. I think it’s going to be positive,” he told reporters.
The Negotiating Landscape
These talks represent the first formal engagement between Washington and Tehran in the current phase. A fragile, two-week ceasefire—which has temporarily cooled regional tensions—cleared the path for this meeting.
Despite the diplomatic opening, several factors threaten the process:
-
Israel’s military strikes on Hezbollah.
-
Disagreements regarding Lebanon’s role in a final agreement.
-
General regional volatility.
The American Strategy
Vice President Vance leads a high-level team including special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The delegation plans to enforce a structured framework based on specific directives from the White House.
Vance clarified that the US remains flexible but firm, stating that the administration’s response mirrors Iran’s intent.
“If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we’re certainly willing to extend the open hand. If they’re going to try to play us, then they’re going to find the negotiating team is not that receptive.”
He emphasized that the team is operating under “pretty clear guidelines” set by the President to ensure a productive outcome.
The Iranian Delegation
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi lead the Iranian side of the table.
