Utkal Express Begins Stoppage at Rakha Mines Station

Jamshedpur: Celebrations erupted at the Rakha Mines railway station on the Tata-Howrah main line as the Utkal Express made its first-ever official stoppage on Thursday. The event marked the culmination of a 30-year-long public movement, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the local residents.

A Festive Welcome at Dawn

As the train pulled into the station around 5:00 AM during the Brahm Muhurta (auspicious pre-dawn hours), a jubilant crowd greeted it with enthusiasm. Locals garlanded the train pilot in a gesture of gratitude and distributed laddoos among passengers to celebrate the milestone.

A History of Persistence

Despite its small size, Rakha Mines is a vital station for the region. Residents have fought for decades to secure stoppages for major trains, including the Steel Express, Ispat Express, and finally, the Utkal Express. To pressure the railway authorities, the community resorted to various forms of protest over the years, including dharnas, hunger strikes, and Indefinite fasts.

These persistent efforts previously secured stoppages for the Steel and Ispat Express trains, but the Utkal Express remained the final goal.

The Evolution of the Movement

In 1985, representatives from various political parties and student organizations formed the Joint Struggle Committee (Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti). The first meeting took place at the Marwari Dharamshala in Matigora with only six people.

Early pioneers of the movement included the late Gopinath Soren (Jharkhand Party), Fagu Samant (AJSU), the late Dr. Ashok Agarwal (Congress), Chaturbhuj Agarwal, the late social worker Ram Kumar Gupta, Anil Kumar Agarwal (student leader), and journalist Virendra Kumar Singh. Over the years, public participation swelled, turning a small committee into a massive regional movement.

From Negotiations to Results

The committee balanced active protests with diplomatic engagement, holding numerous meetings with the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) in Kharagpur. While early requests to Members of Parliament were dismissed as “impossible,” the movement gained its first major win when then-Railway Minister Madhavrao Scindia announced the Steel Express stoppage.

The long-pending demand for the Utkal Express finally became a reality through the persistent efforts of the Jamshedpur MP, Bidyut Baran Mahato. Local residents and committee members expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the MP, praising his role in finally bringing the 30-year struggle to a successful conclusion.
