New Delhi (IANS): US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday shortly after arriving in New Delhi, extending an invitation from US President Donald Trump to visit the White House soon.
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that both nations would continue collaborating for the global good.
“Happy to receive the US Secretary of State, Mr. Marco Rubio. We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security,” PM Modi posted on X.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also took to X, labelling India a “vital partner” and noting that the leaders held a productive discussion to deepen cooperation across security, trade, and critical technologies. In a subsequent post, Gor confirmed that Rubio had extended President Trump’s White House invitation to PM Modi.
Earlier in the day, Rubio kicked off his four-day official tour by landing in Kolkata, where Ambassador Gor welcomed him and his wife, Jeanette Rubio. The Secretary of State then visited the Mother House, the headquarters of Saint Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity.
Rubio’s arrival marks the first visit by a US Secretary of State to Kolkata since Hillary Clinton’s trip in May 2012. It also follows weeks after a major political shift in West Bengal, where a BJP-led government recently assumed power.
Rubio’s itinerary runs from May 23 to 26, covering Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. The trip holds high diplomatic significance, focusing heavily on bilateral energy discussions ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 26.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will host the high-profile Quad meeting, which Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi will also attend alongside Rubio.
Prior to his departure, Rubio described India as a “great ally” and “great partner,” expressing Washington’s desire to expand energy ties and deepen coordination through the Quad to counter global supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that Rubio’s visit will further strengthen the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
