Jamshedpur: A dramatic incident unfolded outside the SSP office in Sakchi on Thursday when two theft suspects managed to escape from a police jeep, creating panic among onlookers.

The accused, who were being taken by Bistupur police for fingerprinting before being sent to jail, cut through their ropes and jumped out of the vehicle. Both were accused of theft inside the Tata Steel company premises.

Witnesses said the sudden escape shocked the policemen, who immediately chased them. After nearly a kilometre-long chase, one of the accused was recaptured, but the other managed to flee towards nearby government quarters and disappeared.

The escape has raised serious questions over police preparedness and security arrangements, especially since it occurred right outside the SSP office. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and multiple teams have been deployed to track the fugitive.

Sources said a departmental inquiry may be initiated against the personnel responsible. “The absconding accused will be arrested soon. Lapses on part of the security staff will also be examined,” a senior officer said.
