Jamshedpur: The scorching summer heat sweeping across Jamshedpur has begun taking a deadly toll on residents, with another suspected heatwave-related death reported near Bagbera Station TOP on Friday.
The incident has intensified concern across the city after two similar deaths were reported within just 48 hours amid rising temperatures and severe heatwave conditions.
Woman Collapses While Drinking Water
According to eyewitnesses, the unidentified woman was standing by the roadside near the Bagbera Station Town Outpost and drinking water when she suddenly collapsed and fell unconscious.
Local residents immediately rushed to her aid and attempted to revive her by splashing water on her face, but she reportedly died on the spot before any medical assistance could arrive.
Upon receiving information, police reached the scene, took custody of the body and initiated an investigation. Authorities said the identity of the deceased woman has not yet been established.
Earlier Incident Reported on Dimna Road
The latest tragedy comes a day after another suspected heat-related death was reported on Dimna Road.
On Thursday, a man reportedly collapsed suddenly and was rushed to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Although officials have not yet confirmed the exact causes of death in both cases, medical experts believe extreme heat and heatwave conditions may have played a major role.
IMD Issues Yellow Alert Till May 24
Amid rising temperatures, the India Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for Jamshedpur and adjoining areas till May 24.
Weather officials have advised people to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement, especially between 12 noon and 3 pm, when heat intensity remains at its peak.
On Friday, Jamshedpur recorded a maximum temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature stood at 29 degrees Celsius.
Sharp Rise in Patients at MGM Hospital
The impact of the intense heat is now becoming increasingly visible in hospitals across the city.
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital witnessed a heavy rush of patients on Friday, with nearly 950 people visiting the OPD by 3 pm.
Hospital records showed that the highest number of patients—256—were treated in the Medicine Department.
Heatstroke Cases Increasing Rapidly
According to hospital officials, more than 15 patients visited the hospital on Friday alone with complaints related to heatstroke and heat exhaustion.
Patients reported symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, high fever, dehydration and weakness.
MGM Hospital Superintendent Dr. Balram Jha stated that cases of heat-related illnesses have increased significantly over the past week.
Doctors Advise Precautionary Measures
Doctors have advised residents to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and take necessary precautions during daytime hours.
Medical experts recommended:
- Drinking plenty of water and ORS
- Wearing light cotton clothes
- Avoiding direct sunlight during afternoon hours
- Taking immediate medical help in case of dizziness or weakness
Authorities have appealed to elderly citizens, children and outdoor workers to remain especially cautious as temperatures are expected to remain high over the coming days.
