Two-phase JSSC exams likely to return, proposal under review

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) is preparing to revert to a two-phase examination process for its recruitment exams, marking a shift from the single-phase format followed over the past four years. This change will require amendments to the JSSC Examination Conduct Amendment Rules-2021.

Prior to 2021, recruitment exams—including graduate, diploma intermediate level tests—were held in two stages: a preliminary exam followed by a main exam. However, in 2021, the government approved a revised format to simplify the process into a single stage. According to JSSC, this change has led to complications, including a higher risk of paper leaks and an influx of non-serious candidates.

Sources in the Personnel Department have confirmed that a formal proposal for amending the current rules has been drafted based on JSSC’s suggestions and is being sent to the Law and Finance departments for review. Once approved, the proposal will be placed before the Council of Ministers.

The previous two-stage format tested candidates on general studies, science, mathematics, reasoning, computer awareness Jharkhand-specific topics in the preliminary exam. The main exam further assessed candidates’ knowledge in Hindi, English tribal/regional languages, as well as current affairs and state-related issues.

Additionally, JSSC has raised concerns over the capacity of online exams. It claims the infrastructure can only support 6,000 candidates per day, making large-scale computer-based testing impractical. The Commission has recommended a return to offline exams to streamline the process and improve fairness.

“Due to the one-phase structure, the examination process has become more vulnerable and lengthier,” a JSSC official noted.

The final decision now rests with the state government, but officials suggest the shift is likely to be implemented soon, signaling a significant procedural change for aspirants preparing for competitive exams in Jharkhand.
