Tusker kills 22 year-old near Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Feb 16: A wild elephant trampled a 22 year old youth to death in Indbani village of Shyamsunderpur under Chakulia block late Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Gopal Mahato.

Sources said the youth had gone to inspect his sugarcane crop when the tusker suddenly came there and caught him in its trunk. The tusker threw down the victim on the ground and trampled him to death, sources said.

Gopal was seriously injured in the incident. He fell unconscious for several hours. When he came round, he called his brother for help. He was being taken to hospital when he breathed his last.

Local MLA Sameer Mohanty, police and forest officials and local villagers visited the scene in the morning. The administration authorities assured to help the villagers in every possible manner. An ex gratia compensation of Rs 25,000 was given to the next of kin of the deceased. Rs 3.75 lakh more would be given to the kin very soon, officials said.

Forest officials said additional guards and vehicles would be pressed into service to ensure safety of villagers.
