Jamshedpur, May 12: Shockwaves of a strong earthquake that hit Nepal on Tuesday were felt over thousands of miles as far as Jamshedpur and parts of Jharkhand including Capital Ranchi.
Several buildings, residential complex and Shopping Malls in Jamshedpur swayed for a few seconds and people scurried into the streets. Earth shook twice in Jamshedpur, first at 12.35 pm and second with half an hour at 1.09 pm. It was measured 2.5 on the Richter scale.
According to the meteorological department more such shocks can be felt in Jamshedpur along with Jharkhand and people need to be alert. No causality was reported.
It comes less than three weeks after a devastating 7.8 magnitude quake killed more than 8,000 people and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes in the region.
Tremors were felt in several places in Jharkhand but no loss of life or property damage was reported.
Tremors were felt in Ranchi, Dumka, Giridih and in other places around 12.35 PM for a few seconds, an official said.
There was no report of any damage to life or property. Voltas House, a business centre which houses several corporate offices in Bistupur saw people rushing out in the open for safety.
“I was collecting money from a customer when we felt vibration and immediately rushed from 2nd floor to the ground and then in the open”, said Anirudh Singh, Axis Bank employee at Voltas House.
The earthquake brought people into panic. In the capital city Ranchi, citizens were seen running out from buildings into open spaces. In many schools, children ran to safety in field.
Elsewhere in Jamshedpur, parents could be seen clutching children tightly and hundreds of people were frantically trying to call relatives on their mobile phones.
‘Once we were outside, there was chaos in the street. We walked right to the middle of the street, and stood there as motorcycles zoomed past us.
There was fear in many people’s eyes’, said Tata AIG life Insurance employee outside his office in Bistupur.
